Smoking cigarettes isn't only bad for your health, it's also a prime suspect for polluting our oceans, parks, soil, and beaches. It's estimated that each year, around 4.5 trillion cigarette filters end up as environmental waste. During the 10-year cycle it takes for filters to decompose, they also leach harmful chemicals into the environment. This process is known to kill wildlife and restrict the growth of natural vegetation.

So, it's clear that cigarettes are terrible for the environment, but how do vapes/e-cigarettes fair as an alternative?

How damaging is vaping for the environment?

Well, there is some good news. It appears that while vaping does still cause an unacceptable level of environmental damage, it's undoubtedly a better way to consume nicotine. However, there are steps we can take to help reduce additional environmental damage whilst vaping.

We've put together a list of 5 things that you can start doing today to become a more eco-friendly vaper,  let's take a look:

1. Opt for re-fillable devices

If you are a user of disposable vapes such as the popular ‘elf bars’ one of the easiest things you can do to help the environment is invest in a good quality refillable vape. Not only will this save you some money in the long term, it will also help reduce the number of disposable vapes that end up in a landfill.

Did you know?

Every week, more than 1.3 million disposable vapes end up in landfills.

2. Reduce power usage

When not in use you should take care to turn off your device to help conserve and prolong its battery life, don't just leave it on standby. Additionally, it's wise to not leave it plugged in longer than necessary. When it's fully charged remember to unplug it.

If you are serious about saving power you should opt for a MTL vape. This is also a great way to save money on e-liquid and coils!

3. Use organic vape juice

Switching to organic vape juice helps to reduce the pollution from the production processes that propylene glycol (PG) based juices demands. A vegetable glycerin (VG) alternative is much better for the environment as they use biodegradable materials and meet certain standards set by authorities.

4. Recycle components

Vapes are made up of lots of different materials, many of which are hazardous. For this reason, they should never be thrown in the bin, littered or dumped into any water supply. Instead, it's wise to go down to your local vape shop and enquire whether they take in old vape coils, batteries, and juice bottles for recycling. This would probably be your safest and easiest route. However, your local recycling company should also accept these items.

If you are looking to get rid of old vape juice, you should look to use absorbent materials such as sawdust or cat litter to soak up the liquid before disposing of it in a biodegradable bag.

5. Buy E-liquid and hardware locally

As with many of our recommendations for purchasing, it's a great idea to try and buy your vape hardware and liquid from a locally sourced shop. This will reduce transportation costs and shipping waste packaging materials.

No doubt vaping is a better alternative than traditional smoking, though not entirely void of environmental impact. We hope this list has provided you with valuable insights into how you can make your hobby more sustainable, allowing future generations enjoy your same pastime.
