Fairphone 4: The Modular Phone In A Throwaway World

2 August 2022 | 3 Min Read

The modern smartphone problem

In today's society on average, the majority of people will keep their mobile phone for between 2 -3 years. We believe this trend stems from a few core reasons.

Since the dawn of the iPhone in 2007, each subsequent year has seen huge leaps in phone technology. With each new phone came a toybox full of exciting new features to play with; cameras got better, batteries improved, larger more pixel-dense screens… the list goes on. It was clear to see why people wanted to get their hands on the new device; there was a significant measurable difference. In 2022 though, that picture looks quite different…

Fairphone

Fairphone, founded in 2013, recognized a problem in the industry. Phone development had slowed down, new features weren't nearly as noteworthy and in general, people were throwing away perfectly good phones. Most of us will agree that at this point in smartphone history, we are pretty happy with what our pocket computers do for us, with little desire for more. Throwing away our phones in the lure of the ‘new’ shiny one has become the norm, but why? Perhaps a lack of software support, poor battery life, or maybe even a broken charging port.

Fairphone aims to solve all these problems by creating a sustainable phone which allows users to easily service their own devices, ultimately creating a phone designed to last. All of this whilst claiming to be a worker-focused company, meaning fair working conditions for employees. Not only this but they also fairly source materials ensuring affordability whilst adhering to ethical practices.

User serviceable

The Fairphone 4 boasts features that have previously been present in the mobile phone industry, though for the most part killed off during the rein of the modern smartphone. That is, the ability to service your phone yourself! Though they haven't stopped at user-replaceable batteries, the Fairphone 4 enables users to quickly and easily replace modules such as:

  • Cameras
  • Display
  • Speakers
  • Charging ports
  • Batteries
  • Earpieces

Take a look at the full list of spare parts available on their site, it's quite impressive and certainly refreshing.

They are boasting 5 years of extended warranty on parts and guaranteed parts availability until 2027. Ifixit gave the phone a repairability score of 10/10, essentially meaning that even your grandparents should be able to manage a replacement repair!

Extended software support

Alongside their promise to allow users to service their own phones, they are also offering extended software support cycles, with a guaranteed Android version 15 support. This is amazing and for us, it's certainly a point to brag about. Many companies refuse to keep perfectly good hardware up to date, presumably so they can push the next ‘new’ device into our hands and get more money. Fairphone on the other day is being just that… fair.

Final thoughts

Well, it's fairly plain to see that this phone aligns perfectly with what we are all about, sustainability! We love what this company is doing and couldn't be happier to recommend the phone to our readers. For the majority of people, it ticks all the boxes and at a price of less than £600! it's a hard one to pass up in our eyes. Don't just take our word for it though, take a look at what TechRadar had to say about it.

We've only scratched the surface of what this phone has to offer and what the company is all about, take a look at their site to learn more.
